A Note From Alison:
My journey to midwifery was very unexpected, I always saw myself in a supportive, empathetic role but one in the medical profession, and especially childbirth was never on my radar. I spent 6 months on a service trip traveling around South East Asia and in my time discovered the need in developing countries for trained birth attendants. Being burdened by the world’s maternal and infant mortality rates was the motivation for receiving medical training, and led me to becoming a midwife. My two years in the Philippines opened my eyes to the many aspects of motherhood, and grew in me the desire to serve women holistically, recognizing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs surrounding childbirth.
My husband’s job is what moved us to Shanghai, but having grown up in Taiwan I am so excited to be living here in China. I think it’s so important to have a support system during the exciting and transitional time of childbirth, and feel I can empathize with what it’s like to be in a “foreign country” during such a time. It’s my desire to serve families by supporting them through the childbirth and post partum period.
